You are using this everyday on your PC especially with laptop, smart phone or tablet but have you ever thought what Wi-Fi is? What else you know about this? Those who love connecting their computer in a network but without running wires anywhere or surfing internet on their Smartphone when they are in and around then wireless technology is the only solution.

Some of facts that changed the face of Wi-Fi are here:

Year 1985

The wireless revolution started quietly in 1985 by U.S government that spread in the 21st century.

The FCC released three segments of the frequency spectrum to the public at 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz but this was unlicensed.

Year 1988

National Cash Register (NCR) wanted to connect wireless cash registers so they submitted a request to the institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE), which helped to set a committee called “802.11” with goal to help define a standard for wireless technology.

Many of the first wireless devices developed were incompatible with similar devices built by other companies. Developing an industry standard helped customers avoid being locked into a single vendor device and freedom of independent choice.

Year 1997

The 802.11 standard was established using the 900 MHz band.

Year 1999

The 802.11b standard was ratified by IEEE using the 2.4 GHz band, the 11b standard increased wireless speed from 2 Mbps to 11 Mbps.

The Very first 11b Wi-Fi product came to the market.

The term “Wi-Fi” became a registered trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance which is a global non-profit organization that promotes wireless technology and standardization. Wi-Fi refers to a wireless network product that conforms to one of the 802.11 standard.

“FlankSpeed” and “DragonFly” where the other names considered for trademark.

Contrary to popular belief Wi-Fi doesn’t stand for wireless fidelity.

Year 2000

The 802.11a standard was ratified using less-crowded 5GHz and bandwidth increase wireless speeds up to 54 Mbps.

Year 2004

The first Wi-Fi certified PDA’s and cell phones hit the market, including the HP iPAQ Pocket Pc, Nokia 9500 communicator and the Motorola MPx.

Year 2005wifi.

Word “Wi-Fi” was added to the Merriam-Webster English dictionary.

The first Wi-Fi gaming device and digital still camera became available.

Year 2006

The 802.11g and 802.11n wireless adapters and routers were released by Dlink.

Year 2009

The 802.11n standard was ratified, optimized at 5 GHz, although multi-channel technology lets it operate at 2.4 GHz as well.

Many of today’s 11n routers allow simultaneous dual band communication, making them compatible on the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands with combined speed of upto 900 Mbps.

Year 2010

The number of global Wi-Fi hotspots exceeds 1 million with the help of starbucks, which introduced free Wi-Fi at all of its company operated U.S locations.

Year 2012

802.11ac draft 2.0 was announced, with initial speeds of upto 1750 Mbps (1.71 Gbps) and the possibility of reaching upto 6.93 Gbps in the future.

Year 2013

A full line of 802.11ac wireless adapters and routers released.

Survey shows that one in every ten people in the world use wireless technology.
